Meryl Streep spiller den nulevende forfatter Susan Orlean, hvis roman ”The Orchid Thief” skal omskrives til film. Hendes historie handler om John Laroche (Chris Cooper), der handler med sjældne planter. Han kloner orkideer og sælger dem til samlere.
